６０年代からトランペット奏者マイルス・デイビスさんらと活動を共にし、ボサノバやクラシックも取り入れた幅広い楽曲を演奏した。日本人ピアニストの上原ひろみさんと共演した。０６年に米ジャズ界最高の栄誉とされる国立芸術基金（ＮＥＡ）ジャズマスターズ賞を受賞。多作で知られ、グラミー賞は６７回ノミネートされ、２３回受賞した。【共同、写真はＵＰＩ共同】
